Overview
Fetal medicine is the relatively nascent yet indispensable arm of obstetric care that treats the fetus as an individual healthcare receiver. Intricate differences in the physiology of the fetus calls for focused attention to its well-being and diseases. Through tools of ultrasound, biochemical screening, fetal therapy, genetics and other allied specialties, fetal medicine cares for the fetus during the entire course of pregnancy merging with neonatal and pediatric care after birth. Fetal medicine is one of the most rapidly evolving specialty of medicine.
Objectives and mission
To train Obstetricians-gynecologists in all aspects of fetal care. Through systematic learning process, make clinicians adept at Ultrasound, screening paradigms, genetics, invasive procedures and fetal therapy. Training consists of supervised hands-on and didactic theoretical lectures.
About the institute
The training shall be principally conducted at the department of Fetal medicine and Genetics, ARMC AEGIS hospital, Perinthalmana, Malappuram, Kerala. ARMC AEGIS is a dedicated tertiary level maternal-child healthcare facility located at the medical hub of North Kerala, Perinthalmana equipped with state-of-the-art obstetric unit, the most advanced assisted reproduction facility, neonatology with level-III NICU, pediatrics and genetics.
AAH is a leading fetal medicine referral center of north Kerala. The department is equipped with facilities for prenatal ultrasound, diagnostic invasive procedures, fetal therapy including laser for complicated monochorionic pregnancies and genetics. The protocols of FMF UK and ISUOG are religiously pursued in delivering fetal medicine services and maintaining quality.
About the course
The course shall be for ONE year. It's a full time residential programme. The selected candidate shall form a part of the team involved in providing various aspects of fetal care. After an initial training for few weeks, the candidate shall be exposed to hands-on in a dedicated GE ultrasound machine with Astraia and Sonocare reporting platforms. During the entire duration of one year, their progress and training shall be supervised by a team of consultants. Didactic lectures, journal-based teaching, research and thorough hands-on forms the core of the training.
The candidate is expected to learn and or perform
6 days course in advanced obstetric ultrasound
This course is suitable for practicing sonologists with background in Obstetrics and Gynecology background and Radiodiagnosis to upgrade their skills and knowledge in fetal imaging. The course shall consist of didactic lectures tailored to the requirements of the observant. The observant shall get to observe various scans and procedures done in the department. Kindly note that the training is strictly hands-off.
