Fetal Medicine Fellowship

Overview

Fetal medicine is a medical specialty that recognizes the fetus as an individual and provides focused attention to its health, well-being, and diseases. Through tools of ultrasound, biochemical screening, diagnostic procedures, fetal therapy, genetics and other allied specialties, fetal medicine cares for the fetus during the entire course of pregnancy merging with neonatal and pediatric care after birth. Fetal medicine is an indispensable arm of obstetric care.

Objectives and mission

To train Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Radiologists in all aspects of fetal care. Through systematic learning process, make clinicians adept at ultrasound, screening paradigms, genetics, invasive procedures, and fetal therapy. Training consists of supervised hands-on and didactic theoretical lectures.

About the institute

The training shall be principally conducted at the department of Fetal medicine and Genetics, ARMC AEGIS hospital, Perinthalmana, Malappuram, Kerala. ARMC AEGIS hospital is a private tertiary level maternal-child healthcare facility located at the medical hub of North Kerala, Perinthalmana with a state-of-the-art Obstetrics and high-risk pregnancy unit, an advanced assisted reproduction department, neonatology with level-III NICU, pediatrics and clinical genetics.

The fetal medicine unit is a leading referral center in north Kerala. The department is equipped with facilities for prenatal ultrasound, diagnostic invasive procedures, fetal therapy for complicated monochorionic pregnancies and clinical genetics. The protocols of FMF UK and ISUOG are religiously pursued in delivering fetal medicine services and maintaining healthcare quality.

About the course

The course shall be for ONE year. It is a full-time residential programme. The selected candidate shall form a part of the team involved in providing various aspects of fetal care. After an initial training for few weeks, the candidate shall be exposed to hands-on in a dedicated ultrasound machine with Viewpoint and Sonocare reporting platforms. During the entire duration of one year, their progress and training shall be supervised. Didactic lectures, journal-based teaching,research and thorough hands-on forms the core of the training.

  • The candidate is expected to learn and/or perform
  • Fundamentals of fetal physiology and homeostasis
  • Acquire adequate practical skills of prenatal ultrasound
  • Screening and basic genetics
  • Fetal cardiology
  • Fetal neurosonogram
  • Become adept at performing invasive procedures
  • Counselling (Pre-conceptional and prenatal)
  • Periodic objective examinations to assess and an EXIT examination at the end of course
  • The candidate has to perform an original research leading to submission in a peer reviewed journal. She/he has also to write two case reports (one in fetal medicine and one in genetics) leading to submission in a peer reviewed journal.
  • Prior to starting the course, the candidate has to register in the Kerala state medical council or MCI in case of foreign medical graduates.
